 Dr. Lisa Powell, LMFT-S, LPC-S, LCDC-I

I am a Solution Focused therapist who enjoys working with couples and families, as well as individuals. I enjoy couples counseling and believe that if a couple comes to counseling, their marriage can be saved. Even if only one person comes in to counseling, changes can be made in the relationship.

I enjoy working with couples and families to help them communicate better, thereby reducing conflict. So often our conflicts are because of miscommunication. We fall into old habits that do not help our situation. Conflict resolution and good communication can help families find the right balance.

Saturday and Evening hours are available. Distance therapy, using your computer is also an option!

Elizabeth Powell, LMFT. LCDC-I

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Texas. I am passionate about affirming counseling for individuals, couples, and families. I believe in meeting clients where they are and that everyone deserves to be fully supported and celebrated in their life. I specialize in the LGBTQ+ population and volunteer in the community in my free time.

I use a collaborative approach to therapy, in which the client is the expert on their own life. I prefer to use the client’s knowledge and my training to find solutions and new ways forward without acting like I know more about the client than they know about themselves. Therapy is a joint effort and my clients can teach me as much as I teach them.

Holistic mental health counseling is an integrative therapeutic approach that addresses the whole person—mind, body, spirit, and emotions—rather than focusing solely on symptoms or a specific diagnosis. Because mental well-being is deeply connected to physical health, lifestyle, relationships, purpose, and spiritual beliefs, it’s important to work with all of these domains in therapy. I utilize evidence-based modalities and incorporate different spiritual practices such as, mindfulness, gratitude, and breathwork with clients to reduce stress, deepen their sense of meaning, and build emotional resilience.

I work collaboratively with clients and their families to help them reclaim their identities, build confidence, and create lives full of meaning and connection. I also offer play therapy for the littles. Often, therapists are associated with being too formal, however, my clients experience a genuine human connection, full of humor, and transparency.
My life experiences have shown me that everyone has the potential to create a fulfilling life, and every relationship can grow and thrive. I became a therapist to help those who are struggling realize this potential and it would be my honor to do the same for you.

As a mental health clinician, I am dedicated to helping others achieve personal growth. I work in Texas as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. I hold a bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in marriage and family therapy from Abilene Christian University. I am pursuing a doctorate in the same field at National University. Under the guidance of Dr. Lisa Powell, I assist a wide range of clients, from children to seniors, each with their own unique experiences. I have a special focus on helping adults dealing with sexual trauma, domestic violence, substance use, child protective services (CPS), depression, and anxiety.

I am a certified Crisis Advocate at the Regional Victims Crisis Center, a local non-profit that assists victims of sexual assault and violent crimes in Abilene and nearby areas. I am also certified in Solution Based Casework, Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for health and behavioral health professionals, Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR) for suicide prevention, and CPR.

I am a member of Alpha-Chi, a leading college honor society for graduate students in the top 10% academically, promoting service, leadership, and character. I also belong to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the Texas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the Big Country Counseling Association, and the American Psychological Association.

My Vision

Empowering individuals, couples, and families to tap into their inner strength and embark on a journey towards becoming the best versions of themselves.  My initiative is designed with the hope and inspiration that it will significantly contribute to your personal growth.

My Mission

My mission is to revolutionize mental health advocacy by breaking the chains of stigmas.  I aim to create a unique space where open discussions about issues such as suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, and substance use are accepted and encouraged in an environment where growth and resilience are not just words but actively cultivated and are crucial to the journey of healing.

The heart of my mission is creating a safe, confidential, and nurturing therapeutic space.  This space inspires individuals, couples, and families to reflect on their past, present, and future, supporting healthy changes and habits, where negative thoughts, harmful behavior, and unhealthy relationships can be explored and transformed, promoting authentic happiness and satisfaction with life.

My role is to partner with you on your healing journey. I provide authenticity, attention, and empathy by actively listening, meeting you where you are, providing the tools needed, and remembering that only you can take steps toward growth and healing.  You are in control, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.

The story of your life will lead you through many ups and downs. Sometimes, you get stuck in a low spot and cannot find a way out. At other times, a chapter ends, and you struggle to turn the page and begin the next adventure. Maybe a dark moment lives in your past but refuses to stay there. Perhaps you are a parent watching your child struggle with their own story, wishing you could just swoop in and save the day. As a former High School English teacher, I have always known the power of stories. As a counselor, my goal is to empower my clients to take control of their story and write a more hopeful future.

I listen to stories from clients of all ages, and I am passionate about empowering clients to re-author stories that contain trauma. When clients lack words, whether they are nonverbal or simply cannot find ways to express themselves, I work to help them tell and process their stories. I am especially passionate about working with children and adolescents.

My approach with children is based in speaking their natural language of play. With teenagers, I start by exploring their interests in order to engage and expand their stories. Since the client is the expert in their story, I collaborate with adults as they sort out difficult thoughts and feelings, lay to rest painful memories, and build a brighter future.
